About

Hi! I'm Katie
I'm a sustainability professional working in energy and carbon data management. I live in Bristol, but grew up in Dorset where my family still lives and home now exists as a perfect country escape. I grew up in the beautiful countryside, but my real passion for the outdoors and nature was sparked by my years living abroad in New Zealand and Australia. These years were filled with adventure and freedom; new homes and people. They taught me so much about what is important to me, and were the start of my environmental journey. When I returned back to the UK, I did an MSc in Conservation Science in Cornwall, and my love for nature and interest in environmental issues continued to grow.

Though I work in sustainability and consider myself environmentally conscious, I live "on grid", own a car, buy plastic yoghurt pots, and occasionally eat cheese. I would never claim to live a faultlessly "green" life. However, I recognise in myself that the more I do to reduce my impact on the environment, the more I'm reluctant to buy any plastic, eat any animal products, or take a flight. It grows like a bud, until those niggling guilts that seemed so easy to forget become very difficult to ignore, and living a more sustainable life becomes the only option, rather than the more difficult one.
Though it's true that the world needs to make huge steps, and quickly, to meet our climate targets, as individuals, it is only possible for most of us to make little changes if we want to continue living in normal society with our friends and family. I hope this website can make these changes doable and also fun, and show that these small steps are important - not just for the environment but for ourselves too.

Beyond writing and the environment, my other interests include reading, cooking, walking, wild swimming, films, music, beer... All the good things. I hope you'll see some of this in my writing too.

Thanks for being here.
